Ponniyin Selvan 1 (Hindi) got a little bit better attendance during its second weekend in theatres, bringing its total to 18.65 crores*. After debuting at 1.85 crores, the movie did well enough to surpass 18 crores in 10 days, indicating that the daily average from the first day has been pretty well maintained.
To be fair, the statistics continue to hold steady, which is somewhat of a comfort given how many movies have flopped in the past. In this sense, a film like Ponniyin Selvan 1 with Karthi and Jayam Ravi in the lead parts, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan as the only pan-Indian face, Vikram making a cameo appearance (at least for this segment), and Trisha as another fairly well-known face, has managed to make at least this much money. Furthermore, it’s not as though the reviews were all positive, and at one point it even appeared as though the movie wouldn’t be released.
In that regard, Ponniyin Selvan 1 (Hindi) is now on track to earn 20 crores by the end of the second week and will continue to earn a few more over the course of the following ten or so days until Ram Setu and Thank God show up. This kind of performance ought to be sufficient to give this Mani Ratnam movie a lifetime gross of 25 crores, which won’t be a bad sum at all.
