Vani Jayaram, a legendary playback singer who has sang over 10,000 songs in 19 languages, including the immensely popular Hindi song “Bole re papihara,” passed away here on Saturday.
She was 77 years old and lived alone in a downtown apartment when she was discovered dead, according to police, who also noted that she had a wound to her forehead and that additional investigation is ongoing.
According to the singer’s housekeeper, Vani Jayaram had no children and her husband had passed away.
She has performed many noteworthy songs over her lengthy and accomplished career of more than 50 years, such as “Bole re papihara” from the Hindi film Guddi (1971), “Yezhu Swarangalukkul” from the Tamil film Apoorva Ragangal (1975), and “Malligai En Mannan Mayangum.” (Tamil film Deerga Sumangali, 1974). She has collaborated with renowned artists like M. S. Viswanathan and Ilaiyaraaja. J Jayalalithaa, a former chief minister and major celebrity in her day, was one of the people for whom Vani Jayaram sang.
She was a multilingual vocalist who was born Kalaivani in Vellore, Tamil Nadu. Over 10,000 songs in 19 languages, including Tamil, Malayalam, Hindi, Telugu, and Kannada, have been performed by her.
Chief Minister M K Stalin expressed sorrow over her passing, recalling how he had just congratulated her on receiving the Padma Bhushan Award. In his letter of sympathy, Stalin noted that it was regrettable that she had passed away before receiving the Padma Bhushan Award. Many people, including Telangana Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan, expressed their condolences on her passing.
She was the epitome of humility and a down-to-earth person. She has uncommon traits like an appreciation for other musicians’ talent, according to musician and singer Mahathi.
By 1.30 p.m., after being alerted, the police claimed to have opened the flat’s door in the presence of Vani Jayaram’s relatives. The singer’s maid said that on Saturday, she showed up for work as normal. She told the media here that she repeatedly pressed the summoning bell but received no response. She claimed that she immediately notified the singer’s family, who then called the police.
Vani Jayaram did not have any health difficulties, according to Malarkodi, the singer’s maid of the past ten years, who told reporters. “She was occupied with hosting visitors and well-wishers who came to congratulate her on obtaining the Padma Bhushan award. She answered every call that came in while the phone continued to ring and thanked everyone for their greetings. She was a lone resident,” the woman added.
