RRR, The Last Film Show, All That Breathes, and The Elephant Whisperers are contenders for the Oscars in 2023, which are expected to be announced today.
Finally, Oscar season has arrived. This evening, the complete list of nominees for the renowned golden trophy will be announced. Given that we have not one, but four Oscar contenders this year—SS Rajamouli’s RRR, the Gujarati film Chhello Show (The Last Film Show), Shaunak Sen’s documentary feature All That Breathes, and lastly the Netflix documentary The Elephant Whisperers—India has a fair stake in the Academy Awards.
Thanks to its highly publicised Oscar campaign, which lasted over the latter half of last year and the beginning of 2023, Rajamouli’s magnum opus RRR, which stars Ram Charan and NTR Jr. in the lead, is predicted to receive numerous nominations. Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor were among the numerous categories in which the film’s creators had entered it. However, it did not receive India’s nomination for the Oscars. Instead, India contributed Chhello Show, which made the Best International Film shortlist.
The RRR song “Naatu Naatu” has already been included on the already announced Oscar shortlist. Even more recently last month, the song won India’s first Golden Globe for Best Original Song.
The Fabelmans, Everything Everywhere All At Once, Top Gun Maverick, The Banshees of Inisherin, Elvis, Avatar: The Way of Water, Aftersun, and Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery are among the critically praised films being predicted to win the Best Picture award. In the Best Actor category, Brendan Fraser, Colin Farrell, and Austin Butler are almost certain to receive an Oscar nomination. According to early projections, The Daniels, Steven Spielberg, and James Cameron would compete for the Best Director honour.
The Oscar presentation will occur on March 13, 2023.

Prior to the announcement of the Oscar nominations, the lead actor of RRR, NTR Jr., has been trending on social media. The actor’s supporters hope he will be nominated for a Best Actor award. On social media, the hashtags OscarforNTR and NTRGoesGlobal have appeared.
Along with RRR, three other Indian movies are up for nominations.
While RRR has undoubtedly had a significant impact on the international scene, three more Indian films are competing for nominations in addition to SS Rajamouli’s masterpiece. Pan Nalin’s The Last Show, India’s official entry for the Oscars, is among the contenders in the international feature film category, along with the documentaries All That Breathes and The Elephant Whisperers.
The front-runners for Best Actress are being praised as Michelle Yeoh, Cate Blanchett, Viola Davis, and Michelle Williams. Only time will tell whether these forecasts are accurate and who will ultimately choose the golden statuette in March of this year.
