For Vauhini Studios in Madras, Viswanath started his professional life as an audiographer. His filmmaking career began under director Adurthi Subba Rao after a brief stint as a sound engineer, and he later went on to work as an assistant director on the 1951 Telugu film Pathala Bhairavi. His debut movie, Aatma Gowaravan, came out in 1965, and his final, Subhapradam, came out in 2010. His most recent acting role was in the 2022 film Oppanda.
